Top 5 Tennis Destinations in Canada

Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts! Sarah here, your friendly Canadian tennis coach. You know, I've been all over this beautiful country of ours, swinging rackets and chasing balls, and I've stumbled upon some truly amazing places to play our beloved sport. So, today, I thought I'd share with you my top 5 tennis destinations in Canada. Whether you're a beginner, an intermediate, or a seasoned pro, these places have something to offer everyone. And, honestly, they've got some pretty fantastic scenery to boot!

Overview of Tennis in Canada

Before we dive in, let's set the stage. Canada, as you probably know, isn't exactly known for its year-round tennis weather (unless you love playing in the snow!). We've got hot, humid summers, cold, snowy winters and, in places like my hometown of Toronto, a fair bit of rain in the spring. But don't let that deter you. We Canadians are a resilient bunch, and we've learned to adapt. We've got indoor options for the winter (essential, really), and in the summer, well, make sure to book your court early because they fill up fast! As for the spring, well, let me tell you a little story...

Back when I was coaching in High Park Tennis Courts, we got hit by a sudden rainstorm in the middle of a lesson. Instead of packing up, we decided to stick it out, and what started as a regular session turned into one of my favourite memories. The sound of the rain on the court, the laughter as we slipped and slid around... it was pure joy. And, you know, it taught us all a valuable lesson about adaptability and finding fun in unexpected situations. So, come rain or shine (or snow), there's always a way to enjoy tennis in Canada.

Destination 1: Toronto

Facilities

So, let's start with my current stomping ground, Toronto. We've got some excellent facilities here. One of my favourites is Toronto Tennis City. It's got seven clay courts and three hard courts, and they're all maintained to a high standard. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the club has a real community feel to it. Plus, it's conveniently located, just a short hop from the downtown core.

Accommodation

There's a range of accommodation options in Toronto, from budget-friendly Airbnb rentals to luxury hotels. For something mid-range with a touch of luxury, I'd recommend the Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto. They've got a great location, comfortable rooms, and a fantastic view of the city skyline.

Local Attractions

And when you're not playing tennis, there's plenty to see and do in Toronto. You've got the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Distillery District... the list goes on. Plus, if you're a fan of tennis biographies like me, you might want to make a stop at the Toronto Reference Library. They've got a pretty good collection.

Destination 2: Vancouver

Facilities

Next up, we're heading over to the west coast, to the beautiful city of Vancouver. If you're a fan of outdoor tennis, you'll want to check out the Stanley Park Tennis Courts. Not only do they have 17 hard courts (all free to use!), but the surrounding park is absolutely stunning. It's like playing tennis in the middle of a forest.

Accommodation

Vancouver offers a wide range of accommodations from budget-friendly to luxury. For those who want to keep their expenses in check, the Holiday Inn Vancouver-Centre is a good option. It provides comfortable lodgings and it's close to the city center.

Local Attractions

When you're done playing, there's plenty to see and do in Vancouver. You can explore the city's vibrant neighborhoods, visit the Vancouver Aquarium, or take a walk around the beautiful Stanley Park. And, of course, don't forget to try some of the local seafood. It's some of the best in the country.

Destination 3: Montreal

Facilities

Our next stop is Montreal, home to the Rogers Cup (one of the highlights of the Canadian tennis calendar). For a truly unique tennis experience, I'd recommend checking out the Mount Royal Tennis Club. The club has a rich history, dating back to 1892, and the clay courts are a joy to play on. Plus, you get a fantastic view of the Montreal skyline.

Accommodation

In Montreal, you can find accommodation options that fit any budget. For a mid-range option, I'd recommend the Hotel Bonaventure Montreal. It's centrally located, has comfortable rooms, and features a rooftop pool.

Local Attractions

When you're not honing your backhand, you can explore Montreal's rich history and vibrant culture. Visit the Notre-Dame Basilica, take a stroll in the Old Port, or indulge in some poutine (a must-try when in Quebec!).

Destination 4: Calgary

Facilities

Moving on, let's head to Calgary. The Calgary Winter Club is a fantastic facility, offering both indoor and outdoor courts. That means you can play year-round, regardless of the weather. Plus, the club offers a variety of programs for all ages and skill levels.

Accommodation

Calgary offers a wide range of accommodation options. For those looking for a mid-range option, the Hotel Clique Calgary Airport is a great choice. It offers comfortable rooms and is conveniently located near the airport.

Local Attractions

Calgary has plenty to offer in terms of attractions. You can visit the Calgary Zoo, explore the Calgary Tower, or even take a trip to the nearby Rocky Mountains. And if you're a fan of cowboy culture, don't miss the Calgary Stampede!

Destination 5: Ottawa

Facilities

Finally, we're heading to our nation's capital, Ottawa. The Ottawa Athletic Club is a top-notch facility, offering both indoor and outdoor courts. They also offer a variety of programs and clinics for all skill levels.

Accommodation

When it comes to accommodation in Ottawa, you have plenty of options. For a mid-range choice, the Alt Hotel Ottawa is a great pick. It's located in downtown Ottawa, has comfortable rooms, and offers a unique, modern vibe.

Local Attractions

While in Ottawa, make sure to visit the Parliament buildings and the Rideau Canal. The ByWard Market is also a great place to explore and grab a bite to eat. And, of course, don't miss the chance to visit the National Tennis Centre, home to Tennis Canada and the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame.

So there you have it, my top 5 tennis destinations in Canada. Whether you're looking to improve your game, compete against new opponents or just enjoy some beautiful scenery, these places have got you covered. And remember, wherever you go, make sure to pack the right gear. Keep your rackets well-maintained (check those strings and grips regularly!), and always have some good-quality balls on hand. If you're in need of new gear, Canadian Tire and Sport Chek have got you covered. And, of course, don't forget to join us on Racqix to find local players and arrange matches. Happy playing, everyone!
