Stay Hydrated on the Pickleball Court: Essential Tips
So, you've picked up pickleball, eh? That's fantastic! As a seasoned tennis coach and lover of all racquet sports, I can't tell you how much joy it brings me to see more Canadians falling for this fun, fast-paced game. But, just like any other sport, pickleball demands a certain level of fitness and health awareness - particularly when it comes to hydration, especially in our hot, humid Canadian summers, you know.
Speaking from experience, there was this one time where an organized charity tournament at Stanley Park in Vancouver. It was a hot summer day, and there were players from various skill levels. Some of them were struggling with the heat and not hydrating enough. This experience really hit home for me as to how important hydration is, and I want to pass on some essential tips to you.
Understanding Hydration
Why does hydration matter so much? Well, frankly, without proper hydration, your body can't function at its best. This means your game suffers, and more importantly, it can lead to serious health risks. Dehydration can cause dizziness, muscle cramps, fatigue - all things you don't want to experience in the middle of a game. Plus, in the long run, it can lead to more serious health issues like heat stroke.

Hydration Tips for Pickleball Players
Now, let’s get into the practical stuff. Here are some tips I've gathered from my years in racquet sports:
Pre-game Hydration
So, you're about to head over to Parc Jarry or maybe Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal for a game. How do you prepare? Start hydrating at least two hours before the game. Aim for about 500ml of water, and avoid caffeine as it can dehydrate you. You can find quality reusable water bottles in local stores like Canadian Tire or Sport Chek in the $20-30 CAD range.
Post-game Rehydration
After the game, replenish your body with fluids and electrolytes. A simple, budget-friendly way to do this is to have water with a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon. If you prefer, there are also ready-made sports drinks available.
Dehydration Warning Signs
Pay attention to your body. Feeling thirsty, having a dry or sticky mouth, feeling tired, or having dark yellow pee are some signs of dehydration. If you experience these, take a break and drink some water.
Remember, Racqix is a fantastic platform for finding pickleball matches and partners in your local area. It's a beautiful community of like-minded sports lovers and I hope to see you there!
